As one of the most scenic destinations along the Oregon Coast, the Devils Punchbowl is quite the site if you catch it at the right time. So grab your camera and discover below the best time to visit the Devil’s Punchbowl.

About the Devil’s Punchbowl

The Devil’s Punchbowl is a large bowl naturally carved into the rock and created by the collapse of two sea caves, and over time, shaped by the wind and waves. This natural landmark is a popular attraction due to the impressive force of the waves that crash into the bowl, filling it up at high tide. From the area’s viewpoint, visitors can watch from above the swirling and foaming water inside the bowl. A truly mesmerizing and beautiful occurrence.

When is the best time to go?

The best time to visit the Devil’s Punchbowl depends on the experience you are looking for. If you are wanting to see the swirling water in action with crashing waves, come at high tide or during a winter storm. But at low tide, the punch bowl is empty with no more than some rocks and tide pools.

At high tide take the short hike along the upper trail out to the viewpoint. From here you can safely view the punchbowl in action. At low tide, the bowl empties out and you can access the inside of it by taking the steps down to the beach. This is particularly fun to explore the tide pools and sea creatures that call this area home.

Visit a winery

While you’re visiting the area, be sure to cap off your trip with a visit to the Flying Dutchman Winery. Located along the Otter Crest Scenic Drive, the winery not only pours excellent wines, but it has one of the best views of the Oregon Coast. Perched high above the coastline, the boutique winery provides an intimate tasting room and a spacious outdoor patio with stunning views.

How to get there

Located just four miles south of Whale Cove Inn, this natural area rests near HWY 101. Make a right onto the Otter Crest Loop, from there you will see signs directing you to the location. There is a large parking lot along with public restrooms.

Stay at Whale Cove Inn

Located along HWY 101, near the small town of Depoe Bay, the Whale Cove Inn is a luxurious coastal retreat unlike any other. Our boutique hotel rests in the quiet and secluded Whale Cove, offering stunning views of the coastline and the Pacific Ocean. It’s one of the best ways to take in the beautiful views of the Oregon Coast. It really doesn’t get any better than this!
