Explore some of Oregon Coast’s most spectacular scenery with a drive along the Otter Crest Loop near Depoe Bay, OR.
A short drive from Whale Cove Inn, along Highway 101, travelers can take the Otter Crest Loop, winding west of the highway, which offers a leisurely drive to some of the coast’s most interesting geological formations and views. The loop itself climbs over the 500-foot Cape Foulweather and guides visitors to beautiful coastal landscapes and viewpoints unique to Oregon.
Just south of Rocky Creek wayside, Otter Crest Loop veers off Highway 101, where this stretch of the highway is one way traveling south to Otter Crest State Wayside, with several roadside spots to pull and check out the view along the way. Continuing south the loops turns into a two-way road and retreats into a shaded forest. There are several notable stops along this short stretch of road that make a drive along the Otter Crest Loop one of the best scenic road trips along the Oregon Coast.
Total distance: 4.2 miles
Drive time: approximately 10 minutes
Top to see: Ben Jones Bridge, Devil’s Punchbowl, and Flying Dutchman Winery
Ben Jones Bridge

Shortly after Rodea Point you will come across Rocky Creek Bridge, also known as the Ben Jones Bridge. Built in 1927, the bridge is named after Ben Jones, a man who many attribute as the “father of the Roosevelt Highway” and who was one of the primary forces behind creating Highway 101. There is a small turnout at the bridge where visitors can get out and enjoy the coastal views and watch as the water pounds the rocks beneath the historic bridge. It’s truly a picture-perfect scene.
Devil’s Punchbowl

A naturally carved rock that has created an open hole, resembling a punchbowl, the Devil’s Punchbowl is a natural geological wonder that should not be missed on any Oregon Coast road trip. During strong storm surges and winter storms, water from the restless ocean slams into the rock filling up the large formation that is shaped like a large punchbowl. Devil’s Punchbowl State Natural Area offers a viewing area that looks straight down into the enormous formation, with an extended paved walkway that circles a picnic area, offering even more outstanding views.
The best time to see the Devil’s Punchbowl in action is during high tide when high water surges pound and swirl against the rock. Or visitors can choose to visit at low tide and take the walk to the bottom and walk inside the bowl through one of the openings at the base of the formation.
Flying Dutchman Winery

After your visit to the Devil’s Punchbowl take the short walk on over to the Flying Dutchman Winery. This local winery has been serving up delicious glasses to locals and visitors alike for years. The winery offers a quiet and relaxing atmosphere to enjoy a taste of Oregon’s finest wines. Cozy up to the bar for your tastings or enjoy a glass of wine on their spacious outdoor patio.
